Report on the Tsukuba-Edinburgh Summer School Program (Ms. Chang Yun Hsuan, Mr. Juan Carlos Neira Almanza, Ms. Margaux Noémie Lafitte, Ms. Maria Thea Rane Dela Cruz Clarin, and Mr. Kai Li)

Five Humanics students participated in the Tsukuba-Edinburgh Summer School Program from September 18 to 22, 2023 in Edinburgh City, Scotland. During this Program, they attended the Core Skills course of the Master of Medical Sciences program and lectures and workshops by researchers from the Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM) of the University of Edinburgh. The students presented their respective research themes they had been working on.

Ms. Chang Yun Hsuan (Christine), 4th year student, received the Best Overall Talk and the runner-up of the Most Improved Talk.

[Message from Christine]
It is a great opportunity to visit the center of the regenerative medicine and join the seminars.

Mr. Juan Carlos Neira Almanza, 4th year student, received the Most Improved Talk award and a quaich, a traditional Scottish cup adorned with the emblem of The University of Edinburgh.

[Message from Juan]
Over the course of the week, I was able to make significant improvements, largely due to the invaluable feedback provided by my two tutors, both PhD students at the Centre for Medical Research and Innovation (CMRI), an outstanding institute affiliated with the University of Edinburgh where various studies related to IPS cells are underway. Their perspectives were unique, as they were not well-versed in my field. Nonetheless, their comments greatly contributed to enhancing the clarity of my presentation, making it more accessible to an audience unfamiliar with machine learning, and helping me condense it effectively.

Ms. Margaux Noémie Lafitte, 4th year student, also presented her research and polished her presentation with the help of postdoctoral fellows from the CRM.

[Message from Margaux]
Having discovered the University of Tsukuba and the PhD Program in Humanics through a summer school, I believe summer schools are extraordinary opportunities to visit foreign universities to discover the research being conducted, to exchange with other teams, and to gain experience outside of one's university. I thank the organizers for giving us this opportunity.

Ms. Maria Thea Rane Dela Cruz Clarin, 3rd year student, received 2nd place for the category of Best Talk and the University of Edinburgh leather bookmark as a token.

[Message from Maria]
It has been a wonderful experience for me. Aside from attending the lectures and exploring both the university and the city, I have enjoyed the discussions that I have had with my mentors and colleagues. It helped me a lot in improving my presentation skills and conveying the research concept within a limited time. Overall, I appreciate the feedback that I have received as it is essential for my growth as a researcher.

Mr. Kai Li, 2nd year student, reported that he obtained a deeper understanding of his own research through the presentation of his own project.

[Message from Kai]
The world is huge. Explore it as if you were doing research!
